The Google Maps Client Acquisition Blueprint: How to Land Local Web Design & Marketing Clients in Lagos & Abuja

Finding Clients · October 15, 2026 · 3 min read

A step-by-step system for finding local businesses on Google Maps, spotting real opportunities and turning them into paying web design and marketing clients.

Google Maps is the largest free directory of local businesses in Nigeria. Restaurants, salons, clinics, schools, real estate firms and logistics companies all list themselves there. For a freelancer, that is a ready-made prospect list.

The problem is that most people use it badly: they copy a hundred numbers, send the same message to all of them and get silence. This blueprint shows a better way.

Step 1: Pick one niche and one area

Do not search "businesses in Lagos". Search something specific such as "dental clinics in Lekki" or "event centres in Wuse". A narrow search gives you businesses with similar problems, so one pitch can be adjusted quickly for each.

Good starter niches in Lagos and Abuja:

  • Restaurants and lounges
  • Salons, spas and barbershops
  • Private schools and creches
  • Clinics, pharmacies and dental practices
  • Real estate agents and property developers
  • Gyms and fitness studios

Step 2: Read the listing like an auditor

For each business, look for gaps you can fix:

  • **No website**, or a website that is broken or not mobile friendly
  • **Few or old reviews**, or reviews with no owner replies
  • **Missing photos, hours or phone number**
  • **No linked Instagram or Facebook**, or a page that stopped posting

Each gap is a reason to talk. A clinic with 200 reviews and no website is a strong web design lead. A busy restaurant with poor photos is a strong content or marketing lead.

Step 3: Score and prioritise

Not every business is worth your time. Prioritise businesses that are clearly active (recent reviews, many ratings) but have an obvious gap. They have money and a visible problem.

In LEADUS, every search result gets an Opportunity Score based on these signals, so you can sort by the best prospects instead of guessing.

Step 4: Save and organise

Move your chosen businesses into a lead list with the category, phone, website and your notes. Write one line about the specific gap you noticed. That line becomes the opening of your pitch.

Step 5: Pitch the gap, not your service

Bad: "Hello, I am a web designer. Do you need a website?"

Better: "Good afternoon. I found [Business] on Google Maps and saw you have great reviews, but there is no website for customers who want to see your prices before calling. I put together a quick idea of what a simple page could look like. Can I send it?"

Lead with what you noticed, offer something small and useful, and ask a simple yes or no question. See our WhatsApp and email pitch scripts for more examples.

Step 6: Follow up on a schedule

Most replies come after the second or third touch. A simple rhythm:

  • Day 1: first message
  • Day 2 or 3: short reminder
  • Day 7: share a quick example or result
  • Day 14: final polite check-in

Track each stage (Contacted, Replied, Interested, Negotiating, Closed) so you always know who to message next.

Step 7: Close and record

When a client agrees, confirm scope, price and timeline in writing and collect a deposit. Record the sale, your costs and your profit so you know which niche and area actually pays.

A daily routine that works

  • 15 minutes: search one niche in one area and save 10 qualified businesses
  • 15 minutes: send 10 personalised messages
  • 10 minutes: follow up with yesterday's and last week's leads

Repeat for 30 days and you will have a real pipeline. Start free with LEADUS to run this blueprint from one dashboard.
